The German speaking Eastern cantons of Belgium

The Eastern cantons of Belgium represent a 20 to 50 km wide border area that is historically German speaking and previously belonged to the German Reich. It includes the area around Eupen, Kelmis, Malmedy and St. Vith.

* Until 1795, this small strip of land belonged to the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg.
* From 1795 – 1814, it was part of France referred to as the "département de l'Ourthe".
* From 1814 – 1919, it belonged to Prussia
* Since 1920, it has belonged, with interruption during the Second World War, to Belgium
